How To Prepare Your Tracks And Hire A Professional Mix Engineer

I think I have all of your masterclasses and I'm always looking for more lol. At this point it's not even to learn but to see different ways of mixing.... and also to sit down, drink some coffee and just listen to you explain it with my eyes closed. It's like meditating while learning at the same time. Cheers!
I like to know if this video can help to anyone. Especially for newbies! How are they supposed to hear the compressor at GR 1-2dB??? I remember that about 20 years ago in the beginning I didn't hear what the compressor was doing at all. I put it on the tracks as I saw it with my colleagues or fished out some preset. I definitely needed a much more brutal GR to understand how to set the compression.
If I put the VU-meter in an insert slot I have no reaction on fader movement! Logic Pro X. Anyone?
This vs. the HD490 Pro for mixing?
There has to be a time when frequency response by itself be considered inadequate information for the assessment of the quality of a sound reproduction system. Waterfall graphs, and transient response are also VERY important because they show how the vibrating part of the device is able to handle its own vibration. If it can not then this means that it produces sound AFTER the signal actually has stopped "ordering" it - the result can be flabby reproduction of sound and loss of clarity and all this while the ferquency response could be absolutely flat. Bass frequencies are harder to manage because they require very large movements and these are the ones that are hard to control. It's like a car's suspension - the large bumps are the ones that create the "floating" feeling while driving, in inadequately suspended cars. Frequency response would be enough if music was only constant frequencies playing at a fairnly constant volume throughout - but music is a widely dynamic projection of waves with varying frequencies AND dynamics. Given the very light construction of the membrane in planar magnetic headphones, in theory they should be very promising in this regard.
Thanks very much for the review Sarah. Cheers and always a joy to watch your videos
My pleasure!
Thank you for this detailed demonstration, Lady!!!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Glad it was helpful!
Thankyou so much for this review, I'm spending a lot of late nights in my home studio and was looking for something with clarity not having to use my monitors as my neighbours would not be happy ...thanks again 🤘
You're so welcome!
Hey Sara, thank you for this review. Ah ah!Yes these headphones look gigantic on you and show you mean business :-). As for the sound quality I couldn't agree more, no compromise there. I have had Verum 1 for a couple years now and mix on them on an almost daily basis on top of my monitors. What I really like about them other than their pristine sound quality is the sense of space and depth they give you which is quite rare for headphones. They are good to place instruments in the stereo field. I like to combine them with the Ultrasone Pro 900 to check different aspect of the mix (harshness/bottom end). One thing people need to be aware though when purchasing them is that they must not be in a hurry, expect several months you receive them. Also I had some issues with the stereo cable which was not as sturdy as it could be, Igor sent me a replacement one but same issue again so just purchased one and everything good now. I know the Verum 2 kickstarter was very successful and that doesn't surprise me. I enjoy your channel.
Thanks for the feedback and yes, I think it took around 3 weeks for me to get them. But, commendable give n the current situation in Ukraine. I'm glad you have had such a positive experience with them.
I've been watching for a year or so but shall stop now because you're flogging headphones and encouraging headphone mixing by doing so.
Doing a headphone check during mixing is standard procedure for any mix engineer. It's the same reason engineers have cubes, NS10s, a mono speaker, among other monitoring devices. To ensure your mix sounds great on any source and to avoid any problems, especially phase which headphones really help to find. If you're only using one set of monitors and not utilizing headphones at all, you're leaving a lot on the table in terms of ensuring you have a great mix that translates. Lastly, there are countless highly successful mix engineers that only mix on headphones. In short, mixing on headphones vs monitors doesn't matter as long as you trust the reference because it translates.
@@The-Skyking ...checking yes, full mixing preferably not. The point is that the channel is flogging headphones. In short, based on your explanation, the channel should be flogging car stereo speakers as well. Sophistry doesn't win the day on this one.
@@raycochrane3971 A review is not flogging. Look at the side bar at ALL the producers reviewing, mind you, unpaid reviews. Their opinion. Which is what people want. Other user's experiences. Maybe you're mad it's a Ukrainian product.
@@The-Skyking Isolated, single unit, video all about the goodness...yeah it's a flog vid.
Thanks for review, Sara!
My pleasure!!
The Verum1 is great. Just got a set of the Verum 2 ordered via kickstarted.
That’s great! Let us know what you think of the Verum 2’s when you get them
Like a weight lifter I do warm up sets before mixing. I have some songs I love the sound of and I listen to them before every session. I found I need to do this every once and a while because if I hear something long enough it becomes right even if it has issues so the quicker you fix issues the less likely I am to grow to except it.
I absolutely agree! Thanks for sharing
I haven't tried mixing in planars but these look interesting especially for the price. I've been using Sienna Rooms with headphones for a second and third opinion along with my monitors. The princess Leia thing cracked me up!
Haha! Glad you enjoyed the video
Not exactly low priced
That’s relative of course, but for a pair of good sounding planar magnetic headphones, I’d say they are.
And for a pair of headphones that are not mass produced and are assembled by a man, that's not expensive.
“Low price” is relative friend. You consider a base model Yaris at $15k to be cheap. Because relative to the industry and features provided, it is cheap.
This is absolutely incredible. I don't know how I found this channel but I'm glad I did. This is such a concise overview. Thank you
Wow! Thanks for watching 😁
Amazing content. Thank you for teaching us so much! Subscribed!
My pleasure!
It would be a shame if it is real leather on the ear-pads :(
TBH I couldn't tell but it sure felt like leather. I might be wrong about that
It's a real leather on earpads in basic variant. Upon request I install pads from protein leather
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Thanks so much! Will investigate further
@@VerumAudio Thanks for chiming in. Presumably there are no other animal-products used? Also, is there an extra charge for the alternate pads? Thanks :)
@@el-bov8034 no extra charge and no other animal sourced products except earpads unless client choose vegan pads.
I see you've used VSX, Sara. I'm a fan but haven't used planar magnetic headphones so don't really know how they compare. I have Sound ID as well, but I think the benefit of the VSX the emulation of the crossover of in room speakers.
It's great to hear you're a fan of VSX! Planar magnetic headphones do offer a different sound experience, but the emulation of in-room speaker crossovers is a great feature.
Hi there Sara! Do you mind telling me what lens you are using to get that nice bokeh behind you?
Good question. Although, the latest iphone/samsung galaxy flagships can do this superbly well.
Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 (Amazon affiliate link here amzn.to/45P2Y0K)
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Thank you! And...wow! That's pretty affordable...if I follow the link and make a purchase do you get a cut? (Sorry, I'm a wannabe RUclipsr and I'm trying to learn how all this works).
Audeze MM-100 are a much better proposition, £399 inc VAT with UK support and a more ethical company with much better customer service ($399 US/EU). Or, Sony MDR-MV1 @ £339. Google "Verum Audio Scandal", The owner has an apalling reputation (racist and poor customer service).
Do you mix using planar magnetic headphones? If so, what differences did you notice over your previous pair?
I actually mix on Verum 1 since almost 1 year now. I don't feel the need to have frequency correction contrary to my dynamic headphones. And I just ordered the Verum 2 from their Kickstarter campain
These guitars sound like they are overpowering everything else in the mix. Yes they sound bright and clear but they’ve just eaten up so much midrange I’m struggling to hear the drums and I’m not sure where the vocal sits there?
Just a question. When u say u want ur kick and bass to sit around -7/3 respectively. Is that after you’ve set the gain for each to hit around -18 at the start. Then u either lower the gain on the last plug in ( if it has an output control) or you lower the fader to where u want to be? If that makes sense? Cheers. Great channel :)
Hi, Its a good video, thanks for sharing. how to calibrate the fabpro limter in -14 ? thank you.
I totally appreciate the simplicity in your approach when preparing to process audio. I love your channel! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🔥🔥🔥🤮🔥🔥🔥🖖🏾
Thank you!
I've been finding my HD 600s lacking in bass accuracy and transient response when mixing, but I think you've persuaded me to take the plunge with the 490s. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Your channel has been a great source of learning as a beginner in the mixing process itself. Thank u so much!
Happy to help!
Immediate Like at the moment the cat ran through the picture.
Awesome!
Thanks!
Sub enjoyed and informative..
Awesome, thank you!
Great video! Where do you suggest starting if you make ambient music? Kicks you aim for around -6/7 but say I’m starting with a pad, just aim for 0 VU and build around that? Start with some glitchier sounds because they are more transient?
Great explanation. Avoid paralysis by analysis :)
Another very informative video of yours. Thank you so much for that. I just discovered your invaluable channel and I have a lot of catching up to do !
Awesome, thank you!
Absolutely inspiring video, well articulated and to the point. This will undoubtedly help me manage the low end of my mixes, which I always find difficult. Thank you so much !
Glad it was helpful!
Do you have any Hardware because it sounds super Digital.. I think it’s sounds crunchy.. as if the instruments disappear the vocals.. idk?
great channel! thanks a lot! you´re great!
Thanks a lot!
Thank you for the video's. I often see producers who have maybe two or three reverb buses and delays that they send varying amounts of lots of different instruments tracks to them. What are the best settings to use in these cases as the only setting that would change is the send amount. Could you recommend a ball park preset to use? Thanks again.
Think in terms of size or length. Small, medium and large reverb, short. med and long delay. Good effects starting points can often be found in presets.
thanks
You're welcome!
Your videos are really analytical and your explanations are extremely clear and concise, and the presentation is personable and professional. A great alternative to many of the other RUclips channels. 🙂🙂🙂
Thank you! I'm glad you like them
Very clear, articulate and useful ! Thanks ❤
Glad it was helpful!
This is brilliant, thank you. How do I apply gain staging techniques to a weak DI signal, so that it's suitable for a guitar amp plugin, for example?
I'd probably use clip gain to boost its volume pre inserts. I'd look at the manual for the plugin to see if it recommends how loud the input signal should be for its best operation.
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Thanks so much, Sara
Thanks so much!! These go-to frequencies really improved the sound of my hard rock guitars in my mix. 👍👍👍✌ First, I dialed in a beefy distortion with Amplitube 5 on two DI'd guitar tracks that I panned L and R and sent to a group bus. Then I implemented your tips using the Waves F6 Dynamic EQ on the bus. I got a big sound that sits well even with just the 2 tracks. I might try sticking on a CLA MixHub or a Waves E-Channel next and see about those 3-D space enabling harmonics you mentioned but I'm pretty impressed with what I've got so far. The Q3 is a bit pricey for me yet but someday...
That’s great!
Just gotta say thanks, for this series on EQing, for the life of me i couldn't get the bass under control, i use Isotope Tonal Balance , and it was off the scale, i was using some wild EQ curves to try to balance out the.mix, now it slots right in the zone, with no EQing on the mix buss. If you can? keep doing these long form tutorials. You're a diamond in the rough, that is youtube sound engineering tutorials 🤘
That's brilliant! Glad it helped you
OMFJG!!! I only see your smile! 😍😍😍😍
Thumbs up! Question. Adding EQ plugins and compression plugins on my vocals after recording also add volume when mixing. This is why i should gain stage my backing track to OVU on a VU meter to leave headroom for mixing. Is this correct? Thanks
Yes, exactly
is it possible to achieve such good mixes with good quality sample libraries ou reckon? I've been composing neo classical for a bit and my sound never comes out as lively.
Yes, absolutely. The quality of the sample library (and the programming) means less work and fewer plugins, which I find leads to the openness I think you're referring to.
Tracking and editing my songs consume most of my time. Chasing perfection in the mixing process goes quicker and is more fun, but it all takes months, start to finish.
In that learning context, don't expect perfection, get as close as you can and accept the imperfections. Move on to the next mix!
Hey Sarah thanks so much for your helpful information. It’s so refreshing clear precise and to the point. I’m learning a lot from your channel. Keep up the great work. As y’all would say hit that subscribe button. 😊I will.
You are so welcome and thank you!
